Silicon Valley of the East

With more than $5 billion dollars invested by chip makers in the Hudson Valley since 2000 and Advanced Micro Devices now building a $5.2 billion fab just north of Albany, many people have started calling the Hudson Valley the “Silicon Valley of the East.” Easy access to world-class R&D, a robust supplier network and a highly skilled workforce make the region a microelectronics / nanotechnology hot spot.

Thriving Cluster Anchored by IBM Global Alliance
IBM has the world's most advanced 300mm chip plant in East Fishkill, NY. The 1.1 million-square-foot facility is home of the IBM Global Alliance, which consists of nine of the biggest chip makers in the world. More than 35 other microelectronics companies are also flourishing in the region.

A Smart, Skilled Workforce

The Hudson Valley has an exceptionally skilled and educated labor force of 1.2 million workers:
• 41,000 scientists, engineers and computer/math specialists
• 30,000 currently working in electronics
• 30+ colleges and universities, including easy access to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and other top engineering schools

World-Class Research Within Easy Reach

Albany NanoTech – This $4.2 billion advanced nanotechnology R&D megaplex has attracted more than 250 global corporate partners and employs more than 2,000 people.

International SEMATECH – This global consortium of leading nanoelectronics manufacturers recently relocated its headquarters and other R&D operations to the UAlbany NanoCollege campus.
