IBM and Partners Commit Another $1 Billion to Albany NanoCollege

Albany, NY (March 30, 2009) – IBM and its research partners announced their commitment to spending another $1 billion through 2013 at the University of Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering here today. The investment will result in another 600 jobs at the new $150 million NanoFab East building on the campus.

According to Alain Kaloyeros, the Chief Executive Officer of the NanoCollege, the bulk of the money –  $625 million – will go toward developing computer chip technology with features only 22 nanometers wide, which is the new frontier of semiconductor design. IBM, which conducts its research with a consortium of other chip companies, relies heavily on the college as a testing ground for all of its major chip advances before sending them to manufacturing at its semiconductor chip fab in East Fishkill.

At the announcement of the deal at the NanoCollege, John Kelly, IBM Senior Vice President and Director of Research, said: “We are committed here in a big way.  We’re committed for the long-term.”

The extension of the deal between IBM and the NanoCollege is in addition to the $1.6 billion deal that IBM and the state agreed to last summer that would bring 1,000 new high-tech jobs to the state, including 325 at the college.  Sematech Inc., the computer chip consortium based in Austin, Texas, is also moving its headquarters to the new NanoFab East building, adding 450 jobs to the 250 jobs it already has at the site.
